Emmaville is located 39 km north of Glen Innes, NSW. At 872 m above sea--level it has a population of 300 people and functions as a service centre to a farming, grazing and mining area where fossicking is very popular. Murray Cod, Yellowbelly and Trout fishing is also popular in the local rivers. Many local guides are available for either fossicking or angling.
Emmaville was originally named Vegetable Creek after the Chinese market gardens that supplied the hungry Tin miners in the days when the valuable mineral was priced at a ‘pound a pound’. It was officially changed in 1882 to honour the governor's wife. Mining petered out around 1920 after the govt.
Fossicking is very popular in the area well known for its topaz, quartz, crystal, emeralds and other minerals. We can advise you on the best areas, as most of the sites are on private property and prior permission is a must. A visit to the world acclaimed Emmaville Mining Museum, open Friday to Tuesday weekly, is well worth the effort.
Pubcrawls on Horseback are regular guests. Come with Steve & Alison and experience the great outdoors. This unique horse--trek has been rated in the Top 10 of Unique Adventure Holidays. Step back in time and experience our vanishing heritage and ride in the magnificent New England countryside of New South Wales. You are guaranteed to meet new friends during your riding adventure and all the goodbyes will be sadly met, especially from your four--legged mate.
Other communities within or district include Torrington and Deepwater each having their own special attractions. Ranging wider you will come across State Recreational Areas and National Parks while bustling Inverell the Sapphire Capital is only 80kms to the south west. We might just be a small country town but we are also gateway to a wealth of natures’ best attractions.
Emmaville has two Hotels and in the image above the riders are pictured outside the Club Hotel locally known as ‘the bottom pub’. When in ‘town’ call in and meet John and Maree Vidler -- get the ‘goss’!
